When will this rollercoaster stop?

First of all, I would like to thank all of you so much for your prayers and concern. I have been amazed at how quickly word travels and how eager people are to help. I just wanted to update you on the latest information. As you know, Blake was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma which is bone cancer. Numerous xrays and MRI's led the doctors to this diagnosis. Stress fractures and a torn ACL was ruled out. Leukemia and lymphoma were ruled out based on bloodwork.

We met with the oncologist today who confirmed the diagnosis based on the MRI. The oncologist discussed the treatment plan (chemo here and surgery in Atlanta) and we met with the social worker to fill out the paperwork while the oncologist ran the scans to the radiologist to review again. After 11/2 hours, the oncologist came back in and said that they think it is just a stress fracture and not cancer. Of course, we were ecstatic.

Today- Friday- I spoke with our pediatrician and orthopedist......they are not convinced that it is just a stress fracture and are very upset that we were given this information. Reality began to sink in last night and I started wondering, "how can you go from cancer to stress fracture?" I have spoken to the orthopedist personally today. His exact words were, "I think it was pretty ballsy of them to make that assumption." To make a VERY long story short, he says that a stress fracture in a nine year old is VERY unlikely and IF there is a stress fracture in a child, it is usually an indication of something else....cancer. The pediatric orthopedic oncologist in Atlanta, Dr. Jorge Fabergas with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, read the report and thinks that Blake needs to be seen ASAP. We will be meeting with him Tuesday at 2:30. Most likely, he will do his own MRI's and bloodwork and schedule a bone biopsy (which is what we want because it is the definitive diagnosis). The biopsy will most likely be done next Friday since he does surgery then. If it is cancer, this doctor will be the one to do the surgery to remove the tumor and also the reconstructive surgery.

We are hoping for the best. I cannot believe that we are on this rollercoaster. I am so ready to be off of it. I realize that there is nothing that we can do until Tuesday, so we are trying to enjoy the weekend and get some rest. Regardless, something is wrong with Blake's leg and he is in a lot of pain. It is hopefully a stress fracture or possibly cancer. I am just ready to find out so that we can make him better.

Please continue to pray for our miracle. We are cautiously optomistic and covet your prayers.

Thank you again.

Love, Kellie

  1. I am praying for you guys. My husband had a similar situation at the age of sixteen, though his turned out to be a benign bone cyst (proven through biopsy). I pray that this is a bone cyst (or something similar) and not cancer, but that if it is cancer, that it gets cured and that Blake recovers quickly.
