We got the final pathology report and according to Dr. Fab, Blake has chronic osteomyelitis. This is a bone infection. It is chronic because is has been "brewing" for a while. Dr. Fab feels like he has had this infection for about 6 weeks. The reason why the bloodwork was normal is because his body has adjusted to the infection. He also said that nothing grew out of the culture. No one knows where the infection started and Dr. Fab said that it can be as simple as brushing your teeth and the infection entering through the gums. It then travels in the bloodstream where it "pools" in joints like the hip, shoulders and knees. The treatment is aggressive- usually 6 months of oral or IV antibiotics. We are being referred to an Infectious Disease doctor here for treatment.
Dr. Ben disagrees with the osteomyelitis diagnosis. His concern is that since there is no sign of infection in bloodwork or cultures, how did they come to that diagnosis?
I'm so confused. This is a pretty serious diagnosis and can't be taken lightly. Hopefully we will get an appointment this week and get some more answers (or even another diagnosis).
